Scale Out (SO) is IBM's term for open systems that focus on higher core counts, high I/O bandwidth, and OS-level parallelism. These systems typically support open software such as Linux and BSD, and tend to use moderate core threading levels such as SMT4.

Contrast with Scale Up (SU).
