About me

My real name is Andrew Luke Nesbit and I'm known online by many nicks. For example, I'm ullbeking on Freenode and GNU Social, DoctorBeans or atthesunrise on music sites, and alnesbit on other sites. alnesbit a litte bit like a nickname. You can't give yourself a nickname. It's something special that serendipity, or loved ones, bestow upon you. In the case of alnesbit, this was my first login ID when using Internet services, especially at university or dialup from home.

But this particular one (alnesbit) kept appearing from independent sources up and I liked it because I could use it in contexts where I had to sound a officious (this was ever so important when you're leaving university for the first time time and going out into the real, scary job market.

So I rolled with it, much like you might do with a normal nickname, without need to think about it too hard. I read a book a long time time ago, when I was a child. A hippy character was saying that nicknames are priceless gifts that your friends bestow upon you. You can't ask for a one. If you're lucky you get one that is natural at the particular time and place.

Professionally I'm a production engineer and aspiring SRE. I place particular importance on resilience and high availability. My most immediate personal computing interests are firmware engineering and learning about other architectures such as POWER and building a DAW (digital audio workstation). Looking ahead down the road, my primary interest is in formal specification of distributed systems.

Whenever the opportunity arises I work in music and audio signal processing.

I have a PhD in machine learning and signal processing. (Before the term big data was even a thing.) I approach my work in an academic manner, and I thrive in environments in which a learned approach to problem solving is appreciated. I especially enjoy research.

My interest in Talos II

Talos II opens a whole new universe in computing. Its libre-friendly design is essential to this.
